The true price of a modified car...?!!
I had to post this up because I am completely astonished by what I have just witnessed. I have a UK MY00 + PPP and I have been considering upgrading to a 'more superior' Scooby.
Anyway, before attempting to evaluate the models I decided to get an Insurance quote for:
- UK MY00 + PPP
- P1
- STi Type UK
- WR1
I have 10 years NCB, no accidents, no speeding tickets and I'm married with a new baby. I wanted Protected NCB and all cars have a tracker. These were the cheapest quotes for my area in ascending order!!
- STi Type UK [Value £24,000]
£749.00
- P1 [Value £16,000]
£817.00
- WR1 [Value £30,000]
£830.00
- UK MY00 + PPP [Value ~£10,000]
£943.00
All I want is for somebody to explain how my circa £10,000 UK MY00 + PPP which is probably running with about 240 bhp can be £100 more to insure than a £30,000 WR1 running 320 bhp????!!!!
FFS, the P1 has 276 bhp and the STi has 265 bhp. How the hell is my car more of a risk? I'm not a boy racer, I'm 33, I have a wife and a child and I haven't caused an accident in the 15 years that I've been driving!
It doesn't make ANY sense - arrrgggghhhh!
If you are a married man with a family, is it really worth buying a car and modifying it, or are you going to end up getting shafted year on year by the insurance companies. I can't believe the cost of insuring the WR1 is 88% of the cost of insuring my car which is over 4 years old!!!
Mark.

ahh, the joys of insurance
dunno about their prices though maybe they pay out more on average on 'normal' turbos than the more limited number cars you've got qoutes on?
could be the car is a higher risk category as that type gets more claims made on it than the others?
gawd knows, but do you need more of an excuse to get the sti?

THIS IS BEYOND A JOKE!
I have now had a quote on a Mitsubishi Lancr EVO VIII MR320 and it came in at £749!!!! £749 for a 326 bhp car worth £30,000! That means the cost of insuring the £30k EVO is 79% of the cost of insuring my existing car simply because of the PPP!
What the f@!k is going on?
The whole thing is a complete load of bollox...

PPP will flag as a modification with most insurers. More importantly for them it involves an exhaust and ECU upgrade which increases performance rather than pure cosmetic changes. Try a few different insurers as some are PPP friendly
You wait till its exhaust, suspension, turbo, ECU....the list goes on, I have enough trouble finding anyone to insure me at all !!!

Get a quote for a bog standard MY00 and it'll be less than all of the others, proving that "modifications" load your premium.
Either that or go to L&V who won't charge extra for PPP.

Try Liverpool Victoria, they are recommended by lots of people on here and apparently they're pretty easy going when it comes to modifications

I have no problem insuring mine, 30+ years old, 6 points, no no claims (due to having company cars for 11 years) 2 cars on the policy, both running seperate no claims, I have the following mods listed, Exhaust, Bodywork, Suspension, Brakes & wheels, I also have business insurance on both cars, and live in a dodgy postcode area
And it isnt much more than yours

I think its all to do with how new the cars are, because the wr1 and evo are very new they cant gauge properly how much of a liability they will be... but give a year or so when some claims have been made and it could very well be a different story.......
