AFAIK if you dont have protected no claims - you'll lose the lot. I could be wrong though - just pray that I am!

dont think you lose the lot, if you crash and you have 4 years ncd, you lose 2 years. You lose 2 years ncd on an accident, and your premium will go up, crash will be declarable for 3 years.

All depends on the company, they give different percentages for number of years no claims discount. Call the company and find out what the annual premium difference is between making a claim and not. Then compare the increase to the cost of the job if you get it repaired out of your own pocket. Bare in mind if your getting estimates yourself don't mention insurance to the garage, as the cost will go up.
