My son will be 17 in a few months time, his intention is to take his test and get mobile as soon as he can after his birthday.
After speaking to a few people it would seem that he is going to be looking at about 2K for TPF&T even on something like a three grand 1.1 Ltr runabout. A friend of his has just been stung for £1500 on a car worth £450.
He's not after insuring anything fancy, but does want something presentable that he can take a pride in.
Given his eager position to get some wheels he's feeling a little deflated at the prospect of spending a large proportion of his savings on insurance, any suggestions ?
We also have the problem that we wont be able to put him on either of our cars insurance to teach him to drive.
Cheers

Another strategy for you and your son could be to go for an older car at say 10/12 years old as this would reduce the insurance premium to say 1200 rather than 2k / suggest you try liverpool victoria quick quote with a few examples to see the effect of age of the car / alternatively you may have heard of pass plus / if not it involves 6 extra driving lessons covering night and motorway driving etc / tesco + cis insurance + direct line all give decent discounts for having this but it is not mentioned on the websites so you will need to ring them for exact discounts offered / lv do not give a discount for pass plus
hope this helps

Definitely go for pass plus - also see if your local council run a "better driver" course - it's usually tied up somehow with the local IAM or RoSPA group IIRC.

Insuring a classic under a classic policy is quite often cheaper than insuring something like a 10 year old Nova/Fiesta etc.

Sorry to here about such high insurance prices. It kills me too due to being 19 and having a Scooby Sport. That's what you get though for quality cars at a young age. The fact that you're having to fork out £2k for a 1.1 is ridiculous. The only route other than pass plus that I could recommend would be having him on your policy as this is what I had to do at 17!

discount for pass plus with privilege was around 18% last year/ best insurance companies for younf drivers with classic cars include lancaster in st ives and footman james in birmingham/be prepared for strict mileage limits on classics/ two websites with useful info for learners are :-
www.passplus (co.uk?)
www.2pass.co.uk
a while back a local driving school offered driving lessons for under 17's on the private road layout at the transport research laboratory near reading/ if you areinterested i might be able to track down details

Insurance is such a nightmare these days. I had a cosworth when i was 19 4 years ago and it was only 1.5k not bad considering i had a couple of points and at that age. Now im paying over 2k on my UK2000 scoob. It does my head in how it can go up even though your more of an experienced driver now and the cosworh was a group 20 car and the scoobs only a 17.
