ok so i dont have a standard exhaust, and i havent told my insurance company. To be fair i didnt know it wasnt standard before i purchased the car (didnt know much about cars), turns out its not standard.
I called the showroom i purchased it from today and the chap told me that its just the back box that has been altered, so giving me no extra BHP.
Is this correct? the previous owner had a louder sounding exhaust put on just for the noise?
Do i have to declare this to my insurance company even if it doesnt improve the performance?

I take it you're talking about an Impreza Turbo. If so, a louder and hence more free flowing exhaust back box may give it about 5 -10 extra BHP (but this will vary quite a lot according to the dyno runs I've seen...) Probably best to tell your insurance company as it could be used as a silly excuse not to pay out on a claim. My company (Keith Michaels) charged me an extra £30 a year for a Magnex backbox though other companies will differ.
