Are Tesco's insurance robbing me??
#1
Got STi Type UK, 3 and a half months left on the year policy i paid upfront for last year with tesco insurance.
I rang them to see if there would be an extra charge for putting an induction kit on the car and they said yes an extra £77.50
Bearing in mind that £77.50 is the extra they want for just 3 and a 1/2 months which is when the current polcy runs out.
ARE THEY ROBBING ME OR NOT ??

depends on how Tesco look at modifications. Some companies allow up to a 10% increase in power before charging. An induction kit will give you about 1-2bhp (on a std car) if you're lucky.
It is however viewed as a typical 'max power', 'boy-racer' mod, so they may charge and admin fee + a small increase in your premium.
Just watch though, I've heard of some companies accepting mods during a policy, then either declining the renewal or hiking up the policy.
Unless you've started to mod the car somewhat and want to take advantage of a cold-air filter, then personally the small gains you'll get from an induction kit probably aren't worth the extra insurance premium.

Tescos bascially dont do mods, great for standard cars but they wanted an additional 700 bucks for 17 inch alloys and a SS exhaust for me. Putting the quote up to nearly 2500 quid.
Yours doesnt sound like a bad deal to me, although I suspect age and NCB comes in to play also..

Ill wait till the policy is up, get the induction kit and exhust system i want, then shop around for quotes.
At the moment im paying £1400.00 per year fully comp inc my other half who is a 24 year old teacher. Im 27 with 4 years no claims.
That also includes a £200.00 protected no claims bonus.
Going off the subject is it legal to have a full decat system??
And does it significantly effect noise levels or does that still depend on what system you go for

"My cars coming up to a year old so it wont need MOT for over two years to you get my drift yet??"
I understand now - I'm not strictly sure - Can the police so a road side emissions test? I would assume the police could force you to have an emissions test if they believe that the car is emitting too many harmful bit n pieces!

thats exactly my point mate, but what gets me is that surly the garage wouldn't be allowed to put on an exhaust system if it made the car illegal?
or would they

Right,
If you get stopped for a roadside and you are decatted, you will fail the test. You can play dumb and say the cat must be nackered and they will ask you to come to the station at a time of your convinience within a certain time period. By which time you will have nipped out and put the original cat back on! They are not qualified to inspect your car on the roadside, hence having to come back for a test. This is all from memory of a recent post. I used a twin catted centre section to get past my MOT
Oh, and bin the filter it will probably give you no more power, sap your torque, and make the car run lean. Unless you get the underbonnet temps down they are useless.

An induction kit does that !? I borrowed one for a couple of hours from a mate, and was quite impressed as i could honestly feel a small improvement in performance.
If they hinder a car that much, whats the point in them??

Steve,
Have a trawl through drivetrain and quiz some of the experts on there. I had one on my old 96Uk and it dynoed qite badly compared to the standard air box. If you can feed cold air to it, and have the ECU remapped, im sure it would give you some benefit. m just not a big fan of them...
They do sound nice though

The admin fees on tesco are high, although i had nearly a full year when i transfered mine it cost £79 literal for paper work :/. when i asked a week earlyer it was going to cost £87, so in a week less it went down by nearly £10. i had 11 months left though.
to be honet i think they just charge alot for there admin work. probably best waiting for the next renual to save you the money
