How lonh do my NCB's last for unused?

I have recently sold my car which means I now have no car to insure 
How long do my years NCB last before they expire and I have to start from the bottom again. I don't want to lose them as they (2) have cost me loads of money (over 2k) to earn.
If I have to I’ll buy a £50 shed and keep it in our garage so my insurance keeps ticking over.
I'll be speaking to my insurer tomorrow but was wondering if anyone else has done something similar to this?
