Sorry if this question has been asked loads of times before, but can anyone tell me if I have to inform my insurance company if I fit an aftermarket exhaust? Or is it only body and engine modifications you have to inform them of?

Thanks

You have to inform them of all modifications!

so yes you should ring them or it could invalidate your insurance

Basically, anything that isnt a standard item from factory should be submitted to your insurance co, this includes things like clear side repeaters, b/boxes, exhausts, ecu's, alloys, brakes (upgrades only but confirm with your insurance co for that) etc.

Tony

PS, they probably will charge you for changing your exhaust but its better than being uninsured isnt it

Thunder 77,

You really should declare any alterations you make to your vehicle.

If the car went walkies would you want paying out for the gearstick and new CD player ? An insurer would want to know about anything that changes the risk that they have agreed to cover. Your mods could arguably make you vehicle more attractive to a potential thief.

Basically if you change owt - you should at least run it by them to see if its okay. You may get some strange answers but at least you know where you stand with your insurers.

Cheers,

John

Need to declare *everything* to be on the safe side. Was modding a Pug GTi years ago and had actually ordered the exhaust and when I phoned to let them know (luckily before the bit arrived) and they said they would cancel the insurance if I fitted it.

Waited until it was due and changed companies. Make an effort of making sure that anything I *might* be thinking of doing is able to be covered right at the start of each year now, just in case.
