the utter ice-novice managed to fit a replacement head unit last night - yay!
not too hot by the standards on here - a sony cdx m650 i think, but it's just the trick for me, nice design, good performance and lots of upgrade options too. (for when the girlfriend feels generous again!!)
Just wanted to post a thanks to all of the great scoobynetters (you know who you are) that helped out with my questions!
now just need to fit new speakers...

Cool, glad to hear you got it sorted. Wait until the bug really takes hold and you find yourself wanting speakers, amps, more amps, subs, more subs, more amps, more speakers, more toys...
