advantage with having a tape deck in the car is that you can get a tape adaptor for an ipod so many more songs then cd and play direct instead of getting an fm modulator and keep losing signal on the radio

First thing that got binned in my old scoob.
If its the original single DIN Philips (i.e UK model Classic shape Scoob, not JDM), any single DIN head unit is a a drop in replacement. Later models will need adapters and stuff.
Of which you can have bluetooth, MP3, USB, ipod, as well as a CD player inputs. £100 will get you these basics (or under £80 just for USB/CD). USB is great...Buy a 20gig USB stick to go with it and you'll never touch a CD, ipod or tape again!
Bit more and you can have amplifier outputs, satnav, DVD player etc.
Next thing you'll find is the speakers are pants......
