Door cards rattle like a b!tch.

What is the best way to sort this?

I'm thinking of stuffing some kind of thin foam in the problem areas.

Any ideas?

Foam is good, yes. I'll try to find a useful article about this...

Would grately appreciate it.

Any info on which foam, where to put it, how to fix it, anything would be of use.

I'm surprised no one has asked this question before, as the interior really does rattle loads when you turn the old bass up.

Perhaps I'm the first person stupid enough to actually need advice on a fairly simple thing?

Maybe not as good as this, but I used a hot glue gun to run a bead of glue along all joins on the rear of the door cards. Not running big bass, but have a Infinity 605s driven 60W RMS each - no rattles from the door cards and a very nice sound - really quite loud enough for me!

Unfortunately dsimantling half the interior to run the cabling has resulted in a couple of new rattles from somewhere round the centre console - need to locate these next.

1" thick foam sounds a bit on the hefty side.
I was thinking of just running 0.5" thick foam strips along the edges and in the problem areas.

Interested to read about the idea with the glue gun. Sounds promising.

What does everyone else do to eliminate the rattle?

There also tends to be noise associated with the plastic waterproof sheet in the door shaking and resonating. I think the idea of a large expanse of foam is to kill this. Any how, wait and see what chiark was going to say. He knows much more than I.....

Agree with Boost II on this also. I have just installed the 605's in my STi and the door cards still resonate like hell, even with some dynamat in the doors. I believe that the plastic water gaurd is the culprit and needs removing completely.

It's a case of just what to put in place of it and how best to do it.

Come on Chiark, we need you....

Cheers

Simon

I've got MY01 with Infinity 605's. Same problem and I suspect the water proofing as well.

I put blu-tak on the studs to stop them from rattling - this helped a lot.

I also tried 1 inch thick foam between the door and the trim - but it's way too thick to get the trim back on. Might try wafer thin foam next time I take the door to pieces.

I'm flattered, but your high opinion of me is misplaced: boost II posted the link that I was looking for.

I've gone for a bit of foam *and* some hot glue. I'd say that the foam does the best job...

Thumbs up

I've gone for packing foam (the half-inch thick stuff that's all nobbly and protects valuable items in boxes) stuck directly to the offending bits of plastic sheet. Eliminated all of the rattles, and also deadened the resonance in the door itself making for a much sweeter, purer sound

Question

Bitten Hero, where did you get your foam from?
