What do you mean by sound crap?
is the bass distorting, is the treble too harsh?
Have you got the polarity right?

Alcazar is right they could have been hammered, if your stereo has a crossover try taking the bass away from the speakers, cut the fronts @80hz and see if the distortion has gone.
