What do you mean by sound crap?
is the bass distorting, is the treble too harsh?
Have you got the polarity right?
the alpine sxe's are a good speaker for the money- http://www.talkaudio.co.uk/index.php...sxe-1725s-r788

Could be damaged by being run too high a volume.

But NEVER, NEVER buy speakers you haven't heard: one man's Mozart is another man's Muck.........you may NOT like them just because someone else does

Alcazar is right they could have been hammered, if your stereo has a crossover try taking the bass away from the speakers, cut the fronts @80hz and see if the distortion has gone.

Go and listen to some at Halfords, an ICE dealer etc, do a blind test with a friend, then buy the ones you like online.
(Halfords has to have SOME uses)
