speakers for an 03 version 8 JDM STi help
Hi guys,
Im after some front and rear speakers for my 03 Blob eye JDM STi.
Ive been told that I need adapter plates for the fronts? Is the link below the correct ones? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SAK-2820-Subaru-Impreza-Door-Speaker-Adaptor-Kit-Plates_W0QQitemZ250525894942QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_ Cars_Parts_Vehicles_Terminals_Cabling_ET?hash=item 3a5481c91e
Also with these fitted would these speakers in the link below fit as they look like the magnets are quite large? Or do you have any recommendations on what ones to get?
http://www.sextons.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=763
With the back speakers, im pretty sure that I do not have any parcel shelf speakers on my model just rear door speakers? Do I need an adapter plate for this aswell or will they fit straight in?
Reason I ask about this is that all the adapter plates state for the front door...
Thanks guys

No such thing as a version 8 JDM car, its a confusing factor that annoys people as they dont exist and people call car x a version 8 then people call car y a version 8 and they are pretty much different cars.
But in your case they dont really change the speaker sizes

JDM MY01 STI V7
JDM MY02 STI V8
JDM MY03 STI V9
JDM MY04 STI V10
JDM MY05 STI V11
JDM MY06 STI V12 etc
Where as the UK/EU/US market would (should) look like this:-
MY02 STI V1
MY03 STI V2
MY04 STI V3
MY05 STI V4
MY06 STI V5
MY07 STI V6
As these never had versions before and would have to start from 1
But most people call them this:-
MY02 STI V7
MY03 STI V8
MY04 STI V8
MY05 STI V9
MY06 STI V10 (2.5ltr starts)
MY07 STI V10
Which really confuses the matter so we just stick to MY and domestic market as it stops all the confusion (plus the differences between the markets varies a hell of a lot, if you said your version 9 has xx and needs yy and its a JDM and someone gives you a part number for a UK car then your out of pocket and screwed )

You do need adapter mounts otherwise the magnet will foul the window when it's wound down. You can fit 16cm speakers in the front, the adapters you've linked to are for 13cm. 16cm will sound much better and you can fit components (separate woofer and tweeter).
Best thing to do is make the mounts from MDF. Good guide here - 2005 Subaru WRX Wagon Speaker Installation
You want as shallow as possible really to avoid any problems with fouling - these are a good buy - Car Audio & Security: Car Stereo, Speakers & Subwoofers, Car DVD Players, GPS and CD Changers
You can fit 13cm in the back but the speaker has got to be flat faced, no protruding tweeter or it fouls the door card.

Ahh, ok cool, that clears that up ;-)
Back to the original question then...
Thanks for the reply mate, those speakers look good!
Do you know if you can buy adapters for the 16cm ones as I have had a little look but can only find them for the 13cm ones
Also do the rears need to have adapters or do they just plug straight in?
Thanks again for the reply mate

Yeah, they look like they'd work. Couldn't find any when I was doing mine so I made them out of MDF. I'm no good at that kind of thing but it was easy, just watch your fingers on the jigsaw!
The rears do need adapters, but thinner than the front. Unless you want to drill into the door metal, otherwise there's nothing to screw them into.
One other thing you'll need - Mazda Mercedes Subaru Speaker Adaptor Lead Wire PC2-802 on eBay (end time 01-Jan-10 09:58:07 GMT)
The OEM speaker wires terminate in a plastic clip which plug into the OEM speaker. Without the above adapter you'd have to cut that off and crimp spade terminals to the wires to plug into the new speakers. Not good if you ever wanted to put the old speakers back in when you sell the car. The adapter plugs onto the OEM clip and provides the spade terminals you need, and makes it easy to put the OEM speakers back in at a later date.

Hi Matt,
Thanks again for the advice! I will buy those now, will make it abit easier ;-)
My speakers turned up today ;-) just have to wait for the adapters now!
I have hopfully one last question .. The stock tweeter (By the door handle), is that already crossed over or will I need to find a place to install the crossover that came with the speakers? coz its quite big... If I do, any ideas of where I can put it
Thanks again mate!

Good question! I haven't got around to fitting my tweeters yet, just using stock ones for now. The crossovers should fit behind the door card where the arm rest is, wrap it up in cloth tape and stick securely so it doesn't rattle. If it doesn't fit there you could try behind the speaker in that cavity, but water does get behind there so you'll have to make sure you make them waterproof. I did this in my last car without any problems.
You'll have to splice those adapter wires you bought (another good reason for having them!) so both the woofer and crossover get a signal. You can get spade terminal that will do that neatly, they look like this
