I put a set of Rockford 6x9s in my v4 type r last year and we had to cut away some of the parcel shelf and the metal underneath. Very worthwhile though as they can be bolted in very well so the sound quality is good.

When I fitted mine, I simply removed the old speakers and their grilles, plus the odd-shaped metal plates beneath them, all held in with bolts/screws.
I then dropped the new 6x9's in from above to check clearances, measured up and made a couple of mdf spacers to suit: they are 18mm, lozenge shaped on the outside, and I used the template that came with the 6x9's for the inside. They are then covered with proper carpet that matches the back parcel shelf, available from an ICE dealer, and the whole lots is bolted down using M4 x 40 mm stainless cap-headed screws.
It's a short afternoon's work if you have the parts in stock. Made a little easier if you remove the rear seats first, which takes 15 minutes tops, and is only about 6 bolts.

Well i've removed the seats before as i had to fit a fuel pump a while back, as for the spacers the speakers already came with a pair.
Im not so keen on having the speakers poking out with the spacers if that's the route im thinking off, id rather have them come up from underneath and look flush on top, nothing worse than a tardy install.
I have a small hobby router should i need to do much cutting anyway.
About the front speakers, one keeps cutting out would that be a wiring fault, im assuming it's common?

i got 6x9 jbls in to my my97 sti v3 saloon from underneath. bit fiddly, but fit. left the original shelf in so it looks standard. I suppose I should have blocked off the small area where the odd shaped metal plate from the standard speakers was, but I dont think it's made any difference, it really is a teeny gap. my system sounds good to me so I'm happy..
you going to use a proper amp too? best way to do it IMHO... as head units dont really drive 6x9's properly with their weedy built in amps

Piece of cake to fit. Remove old speakers including bracket. Either make spacers or cut the shelf to fit. I did the latter and cut the shelf. Sounds spot on and don't look too out of place as i mounted them on to the letal so they sit nice and low.

hi all the thing to do is make a new shelf and put in from top works very good and easy to do and when your at it put logo in shelf any one want to see what im on about email me allaboutaudio@hotmail.com
