How do you know it is an aligment problem? - reason I ask, is that I have now resurrected five cd players (mine and others) by cleaning the lens with alcohol. Two players wouldn't scan the discs at all, the other three jumped a lot, or took a long time to change tracks, or complained excessively with CDRs. All were fixed with a clean.

Excllent John!
I *assumed* it was the laser as the local Sony fitter advised me. Said after 3-4 years use the changer just bounces out of alignment eventually.
How easy it is to get to the lens ? Mine's a Sony CD X51 or similar.

Never done a changer before, and I suppose they could be subject to more vibrations than the household items I have cleaned. However, 3 to 4 year old, it is likely to be something simple, and at least worth a try before costly repair/replacement.
Never used these, but if it was a CD headunit or changer, my first try would be a cleaning disc. Never taken a changer apart (yet) If the case is opened up, a cotton bud and tape head-cleaning fluid on the lens (look at a top mounted portable CD player for reference) usually does the trick.
