Losing radio reception

Losing radio reception
Apologies if this is a bit of a n00b question. My knowledge of car audio is limited to say the least....
I seem to be having a problem with the radio reception in the car. Frequently but in a random manor the car loses the connection to the radio station.
eg. Radio 1 is playing on 98.1 and is working fine for 15 minutes then all of a sudden the volume changes and it goes crackly. If I change the radio to
98.0.5 the reception comes back. It either switches 0.5 up or down from where I was currently tuned.
This happens on all radio stations in addition to my ipod FM tuner which sits on the passenger seat.
The car has the radio ariel attached to the back windscreen (bee sting variety) and is a standard fitting on my car as far as I know (BMW E34)
I'm just wondering if a change of headunit is all that is required. TBH the one in there isn't great and I was planning on changing it but I don't want to
switch to find I might still have the same issue.
Can anyone help?
Thanks
