Default Power from standard head unit?

Hi, I was wondering what the standard head unit's power rating was and if a new 4x50w head unit would power the new speakers I've just fitted, better?? Does it improve the sound quality/bass you get??
Many thanks

What year?

The standard headunits aren't great, so anything half decent would be an improvement. Also, when a headunit spec says 4x50w, this is peak - RMS is what matters, generally they will be 4x15w ish. If you have fitted decent components, you may want to consider an amp.

What speakers have you got?

Sorry its an '03 sti and I've fitted Alpine coax speakers 6.5inch 1725, I don't want to go down the amp route really just a decent headunit. I think the speakers are rated at 40w rms so to get the best from them do I need to power them at around this?? I've never been an ICE techie! Thanks for your help!

The standard unit is pants.... I put an Alpine in, much better sound even with standard speakers.

Then it's all down to your budget !

I mostly listen to mine making it's usual collection of Scooby noises.... LOL

Any decent brand headunit will be an improvement, so maybe look at spending £150 on a Pioneer, Alpine, Kenwood, Clarion. Worth finding a good second hand unit if you value sound quality over gadgets.

If you want to buy online, try Car Audio Direct for car stereo, navigation and audiovisual electronics. or Car Audio Sextons Direct - car audio and stereo direct to your door, both recommended.
