Question

Hi

Does anyone know why my stereo stays on for approx 30-45 secs after ignition is switched off - it used to happen when the original unit was in place and now also on the new unit.

I just used the standard plug straight into the back of the head unit - no wiring was tapped into or altered.

Please help as driving me to distraction as the unit will not power up with ignition if I have manually switched it off and I don't want to wait in the car for it to turn itself off.

I could just be being fussy!!

Cheers
Paul

It isn't a panasonic or Sony unit by any chance?

If it is, it's because of the way the harness accessory circuit powers down - it seems to drop voltage slowly rather than provide a definite 12v-0v...

But you say it happened on the original... Hmm, have you got a 5 door?

If you've got a Clifford alarm it keeps power on some accessories until drivers door is opened or times out.

The original was a panasonic that I assume was an option on the original purchase when new.

The new unit is a blaupunkt skyline san fransisco.

I did consider that it could be immobiliser (std subaru Sigma m30 cat 1)

Car is 1999 RB5. My previous MY98 did not suffer with this.

Kernels got same problem on STiV with Sony mini disk head unit.

Only way to stop it is to leave phone charger in to drain power quickly when ignition is switched off.

I get this in my99 UK 5 door fitted with a panasonic mini disc. Used drive me crazy why it did it all the time except on the odd ocasion when it would shut down straight away.

Relised that if you had the wipers on or intermitent wipers on it would stop straight away. So instead of turning it of by the power button i just flick the windscreen wiper when the power is off and it turns off.

That's a good one to know - cheers. The reason I asked about the five door is that it's a known fault on older cars. Turn on the rear wiper and it powers the radio down

Now it works on all cars, another one to squirrel away into the knowledge base

Just in case you're interested...

Stumbled across this web page by accident (which seems pretty good) anyway it explains why you get this problem & why the wiper thing works.
