Anyone suggest anything obvious to check before I drag out the Head unit? Fronts go thru an amp and are fine, however rears are 100% dead! Checked the plugs are still connected to them, and the wires I can see appear intact.

checked the HU settings, put it all to the rear and I get no sound at all!

Cheers,

greg

Sounds like it's time to get the HU out...

OR

if you've got a multimeter, check for any signs of life across the rear speaker cables.......

Just any idea - good luck anyway!!!

Hi Greg,

I don't think it will be a problem with the speakers if both have failed at the same time. I know you replaced the fronts so I presume you still have the originals. You could try pluging the conector on to one of the spare front speakers. If it works then you know it's a problem with the speakers and not the HU. I suspect however the problem is elsewhere.

Sorry I cant be more help

ISO was all ok when I had the HU out, nothing looked like it was unplugged. Also now got some interference when accelerating.......

Cool

Check the back speakers to see if any of the +/- terminals are touching the chassis. This may be causing your problem. It will cut out the entire back as they will be on the same internal connector bank in the headunit.

cheers, can't see anything touching.

I have the fronts wired up to an amp with seperate speaker cable, so could the old front wires be grounding somewhere and thus cutting out all the speakers inc the back?

regards,

greg

Doubtful, although there shouldn't be any bare wires loose so they should be wrapped in insulating tape to prevent grounding (will nacker your headunit eventually if it doesn't blow the internal fuse first).

It's most likely to be a break in the wires to the back speakers somewhere or possibly a bad connection inside the headunit
You could get some cheap speaker cable and run it from the headunit through the car seats to the rears.
1) If that cures it then you can run new (decent) cable neatly through to the rears and problem solved

2) If the problem persists try unplugging one of the speakers

3) If problem fixed then its either internal headunit or duff speaker (Try another one. If ok get new rears)
4) If the problem persists plug the speaker back in and unplug the other.
If that cures it then the same as 3)

5) If it still persists, then plug in both again and start unplugging the fronts one at a time (and together) to see if that's causing it.

If it is STILL doing it, then it's an internal headunit problem.
You then have 2 options,
1) whack in an amp for the rears (best to test your existing amp with the rears first before buying one)
or
2) (best option) Fit a good quality Sub in the boot and unplug the rears. The bass in the boot will sufficiently pull the soundfield towards the rear.
The only people that will miss some sound are the people in the rear, but they slow your car down anyway and should be jettisoned before setting off

All the above testing may take 1-2 hrs to do. Let me know how you get on.
