yer can be done and worth it imo done mine and a mates, think theres some metal plates from the old round ones to remove and yes the metal shelf does need to be cut out wider not just for the magnet but for slightly better sound when you flush mount speakers into an open area leave a hole wide enough for the whole cone to be exposed to the boot space, ended up mounting mine on top of the hardboard shelf through into a bout a 5mmthick spacer ring cut from some wood i had as theres a gap between the metal and hardboard carpeted shelf an wanted the 6x9`s to sit right and not bow/rattle in the shelf, if i remember right i put some thin rubber below the spacer aswell just incase.Put some 30quid alpine 3ways in mine sound mint but need an average sized amp to be fair to sound tops.500% improvement though from stds lol.

Did mine a few weeks ago (classic). When I did a search on here nearly all the posts said you got to cut the metal, make spacers etc. Anyway I got some Kenwood 6x9's and ended up mounting them below the shelf without cutting anything, then replaced the grilles with the new ones. Your choice as to which way to go, but there is another option without having to butcher about the shelf. I've got some pics if you want to see the finished result. good luck with your install.

Did the same with mine, removed the old speaker and mount the 6x9's underneath the shelf.

Yup bolt from underneath. No cutting need, yes is does block the outer edges of the speaker, so make sure you have 6x9s designed to be bolted from underneath so they don't foul the cone (most are, but you do get the odd ones that aren't).

From an audiophile stance, these speakers are only there for rear infill so what gains you get from hacking about the shelf are negligable.

Did mine three years ago with home made MDF spacers, covered in carpet from an ICE dealer.

BTW, as I'm sure you've already found...back seats and at least one C-pillar trim needs to be taken out to remove the shelf card/trim.

Got some 6x9s in back of my Type R (Impreza), had to make a new MDF shelf to fit them in and metal underneath needed hacking away. Worth it though as sounds 100s of times better than standard.

Never needed to remove any C pillar trims, the original shelf is very thin and bendy and is easy to wiggle out.

Right ppl. i've done it.. all i've done is taken out the round speaker plates for the standard speakers, then held the 6x9's in place underneth, drilled new holes and then screwed then up from underneth. replaced the standerd speaker covers. jobs a good one. Now running Infinity 6x9's, A Vibe sub, and 4 channel amp.. sound amazing. next job is to uprate the front door speakers

I bought a parcelshelf off ebay, that raised the 6 x 9's just enough so no mods were needed. Custom Auto Mouldings - Plastic Moulded Parcel Shelves for Car Audio Installations also sell them but more expensive.
