The head unit on my MY05 keeps cutting out the sound - its all on, ie display working - the odd thing is if I switch off the ignition and switch it back on its all ok - sometimes ! other times it doesnt work all day....

I 've recently changed the speakers - if one of them was shorting out on the bodywork would it cut the sound to all speakers ?? or is the headunit kaput ?

Sounds like a short; the amp is going into a 'protection' mode, switching off and on resets it.

Check your 'speaker wiring/terminals for shorts.
