Default Head unit change MY05 - Well worth it!

Just changed the HU in my MY05 Wagon and what a difference, the crappy standard speakers even sound half decent, but still need changed.

HU I went for was the JVC KD-G721 with USB and iPod compatability, great HU for the price.

Took less that 30mins to swap the HU and get it fired up.

Then collected the dumb silver 2DIN convertor (p/n 66128SA000), this took loads of fannying about until I was happy took almost 1.5hrs!

Had to drill additional holes in the brackets (twice cause I fooked it up the 1st time)

You would think the brackets would be made more universal.

Front speakers next!

Rob, never tried to put pics in here before, but if someone tells me how, or I could email some to someone who can.

Turtle, radio reception is good, never really had any problems on the crappy Kenwood 2DIN either, but the sound is so much better / sharper.

When you post, there's a little picture icon which says 'insert image' when you hover the mouse over it.

Click this, and you can then paste the link to the image into a box.

This puts the picture directly into the post:

Is the colour match between the flapped pocket and the rest of the dash good/close?
It's a little hard to see from the picture.

It's not perfect, but close enough (and I'm fussy), I'll try and get a daylight photo over the weekend, might give a better idea.

Like you I'm quite fussy also.
I want to replace the standard head unit with something that gives USB but want it to look as OE as possible. I'd prefer a single DIN unit - hence looking at the flapped pocket.
I've seen a couple of pictures on SN of the flapped pocket and the colour always looks a little different but maybe in the flesh it looks ok.

cheers

It looks fine in the flesh to me, but I guess it depends how fussy you are!

Hi there,

Is the storage bin under the head unit a Subaru part? If so do you know the part number?

Cheers

Yep the storage bit is a Subaru part, there is a choice of 2:

P/N - 66128SA000 (silver one that I used) @ £11.65 + VAT
or P/N - 66128AE000 (no front flap, just a black cubby hole) @ £18.27 + VAT.

Not sure why the one with no flap is more expensive, but the Silver one looks fine to me.

It's a well worth change, you won't believe how crap the OE head unit is until you change it. This JVC can be had for about £100 + delivery and the ISO connector.

Total cost for me, including the Subaru part, was about £125. Bargain if you ask me!

Cheers
