Do I really need a sub?
Hi all,
Familiar predicament but slightly unusual question...
I have an 03 WRX. I have recently replaced the head unit for a good Alpine CD player which I like. I'm now ready to improve the speakers and originally thought just to replace them with better quality units, noting many people recommend Infinity's especially for Imprezas. One specialist, however, recommended a 12" sub in the boot, plus amp plus the (componant) speakers, saying its not worth it without a sub as the bass just won't cut it.
I have the chance to go and demo, so I can try this out but I just wanted to know some further opinions. What do you think?...
I'm not after ultra-deep bass and I don't listen to hardcare or drum n' bass or anything similar. I just want a better quality sound, yes with better bass, but a balanced, hi-fi sound.

Without a sub the car will sound flat. All the bass which is produced by your front and rear speakers is generally killed by road noise. Adding a sub will add more bass to your system. This will help balance out the sound.

by amping the compnents you will raise the quality and sound of your music so the bass doesn't drown it out basically.
twelve inch subs are the most popular coz they suit most tastes in music - 10" will suit quick punchy bass lines better, 12" will suit the majority of other music tastes and 15" are for real low down frequncies and those who dont like their eardrums (like me)
The sub will add a range of clarity you wont believe
I agree with harold on that point
It's like the difference between watching tv with and without the cinema sound.
YOU WILL NOTICE THE DIFFERENCE

Iv had my scoob 5 months and not yet put my 15" sub back in. im currently just enjoying the car.
But its when a good tune comes on you turn the volume up and fart fart fart. So think im going to have to get of my **** and put her in.
Just make sure that your live cable is up to the job im running 2 gauge but my amp is 1500 wats
And put a smaller amped fuse than your cable can handle so if you do get a power surge then the fuse will blow rather than your cable setting on fire

I tried a couple 12" subs in my last car (not at the same time) and to be honest was disappointed with the amount of bass from them I actually heard when driving along. In the end I got shut of the subs and instead ran a couple of Pioneer 330w 6x9s (mounted on 18mm spacers on the rear shelf) through my Vibe amp in the boot, and I have to say that both the bass and quality of the sound overall was vastly improved.
Had some 220w components in the front and a P77MP head unit running the show. Fooking miss that setup, especially as I'm back to standard audio in the new car Forgot how ****e standard Subaru stereos are!!

I've got a 12" JL sub in my boot still with the standard speakers (cos I haven't got round to changing them yet!), and it sounds really nice. If it goes too loud then the speakers do distort but as all of the bass is taken out of them they are alright. I would recommend having a sub, definately!!!
It doesn't have to take up too much boot space either,

Try just getting a powered bass tube, will do the job perfectly unless you want stupidly loud music(like me), not be able to see out of the mirrors(like me) want to be deaf(like me) want people staring at you(like me) enjoy going to McDonalds - Not like me I may add

I too am in the process of upgrading my door speakers with Infinity ones.
I also like the option of a bass speaker without loosing any boot space and having it sound like a window rattler. For these reasons i am possible going for one of these.

Having seen and heard one, i think it is a great unit which fits neatly under your passenger seat. If your headunit has the connections all you will need to wire is power and sub-out from the headunit.
Just another consideration for you.
Regards,
Steve

I got one of these - http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/pro...cts_id/33.html under my seat. It sounds superb and you get a much clearer bass than one stuffed away in the boot.
Highly recommended.
