Default which gives a more noticeable difference. speaker or h/unit swap?

on all standard equipment in an 05 impreza?

getting really hacked off with the awful quality of the standard kit and realise changing it all would be the best option, but can a reasonable sound be acheived with just a speaker swap or is the head unit notoriously crap?

I changed my head unit for a Pioneer item in my 05 STi, quite a noticeable improvement. I then bought a small Alpine active sub for under the drivers seat and used the HU high pass filters to cap off the bass from the speakers and just use the bass from the sub. It's not a thumper but very pleased with the results.

Changed the speakers first on MY05 and was astounded as to how poor the standard speakers were.

You can't really do just the speakers or just the HU as they really do both need changing.

yeah, thought as much. budget can only allow for speakers at the mo but nice to find out if it was just these that was holding back a decent sound.

saw a pic on ebay of the std head unit and saw it's made by kenwood (IIRC), surprised to see them producing such a pile of crap to be honest!

Yes standard speakers, I did find that once the bass was removed (via low pass filter) the quality wasn't too bad, you can obviously do a lot better but was pleasently surprised.

It's easy to change to a normal sized Din HU, took me about 20 minutes, you will need a ISO harness but then the HU plugs straight in. I went for the Sport/GX pocket below or you can get the Forester one with silver covered flap (both from you local dealer quite cheaply.

Replaced my head unit a few weeks ago with a JVC one. Cost £220 and has DVD, CD capability as well as Ipod connector and USB. To fill the space, I bought a flip up monitor off Ebay. Fitting was straight forward thanks to the info on the ICE section here. Sound is vastly better with clear base and treble definition unlike the flat sounding stereo that came with the car (02 STi).

Now keeps my son quiet watching 'Fast n' Furious' !!!!!

Need to get round to fitting some new speakers when money permits.

Just do the HU for now, it might be enough. I changed factory Hu for a DDX-6029 and it transformed the ****ty speakers. They don't sound bad at all now and I am in two minds whether to go to the extra expense. When playing DVD's the speakers are really impressive and same with the music. All depends on how good the HU is and how imuch it lets you dick about with the equalizer and bass enhancements.
