Default cheapest/easiest upgrade

I've got an 53plate blob eye and the radio/cd unit is rubbish. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that its the worst I've had in any car since a 1980 Escort Mk2 and that one had big push buttons.

I would like to upgrade it, but I don't need something that could be used as the sound set at Glastonbury, just something that will let me hear Radio 5 when I'm on the motorway.

Would it be best to change the head unit with the original speakers, or upgrade the speakers with the original head unit? I know it would be best to do both, but I'm not going to.

If its speakers, what are the best option for an upgrade that doesn't require me having to re-manufacture half the door panel? I want to drive the thing, not spend half my life with it in bits on the path. If I wanted that, I'd have bought an Alfa

Head unit first. Then speakers when budget allows.
