£350 to spend on fronts components
after splitting one of my infinity kappas I need some new front components
I ve been looking at the JL, Rainbow and Focals what would you guys recommend
I take it I can't have a spacer bigger than 12mm so what is the deepest speaker I can have 60 mm
this is all to confusing for me

i got 19mm spacers in mine and they seem to run just fine! JL's would be the best bet, spend a little more and get the XR's, and get a big amp to go on them, they work real well then

i have Boston Pros in mine, they work great! i also have BIg spacers to accomodate them... 18mil plus two layers of dynamat extreme give enough clearance to ge the windows down ok without fouling the speaker cone on the door card...

i've got 6.5" Boston Acoustic Z6's in mine, and it's an MY99 Classic.
I'd class myself as a specialist too as i've worked in the Car Audio and security industry for over 9 years now.

you will get a better mid bass response from the bigger speaker if you use plenty of dynamat as well,
the 5's you will have to use real good quality ones with a good amp if you want a simliar sound to the 6's but you will still lose out a bit on mid bass.
i prefer 6's myself but have had good results with 5's as well so it's a case of what your ears prefer really.
get ouyrself to an Audio specialist and listen to some demo ones is my reccomendation.

If you're looking at spending 350 quid, well, that's a lot of cash...
I'm assuming that you already have a decent amp and head unit? If not, it's not worth putting that much money into fronts alone as you'll not be getting the best out of them. Cheap stuff installed and set up well can sound better than expensive stuff that's not as well set up or fed. Put a crap signal into great speakers and the chances are it'll sound worse than through crap speakers, as great speakers tend to be more transparent, and let everything through warts'n'all.
Did you like the Infinity sound? If so, stick with them, get another set, save your money and be happy. There's no reason to drop more money on 'em if you like them - and remember it's your opinion, not anyone else's, that matters as sound is highly subjective.
6.5s will fit with a bit of work. I had to use 18mm spacers (12mm and 6mm) to get CDTAudio stuff to fit in a classic...
Go to a specialist, have a listen to stuff in cars, and if you're really thinking of spending over 300 quid, get along to a meet or something and hear stuff in cars rather than stands. It makes a vast difference, and you can end up with something that you like, rather than what the dealer makes the most profit on, or what suits the dealers ears the best

cheers I have a JL audio 300/2 amp which should do the job but currently thinging of a 5.25 focal slim because of depth issues as no one seems to be able to give a exact depth a speaker can go
I have had installs done by dealers before and always found faults so will do my self im to anul about jobs being done well, I'm a bit worried about buying expensive conponents that wont fit that I end up selling for nothing
I found the infinitys fine in my old cooper s but in the larger car ( with out the 6x9s in the rear) more than disapointing
if it means anything I have just purchased two phionex gold xenon subs and a jl 1/500 amp to power, along with a a 300/2 amp to power the fronts
i dont want to go to loud just want to switch on the stereo and think that sounds realy nice and have always found the front components to be the key
I know I can get a good deal on rainbow,pg,JL or focal which limmits me
thanks again for all the help guys

There are a lot of 6.5 speakers that will fit, as long as your prepared to either buy / make a collar for them. My infinity Speakers are approx 60mm deep. Most of the 6.5's i've just looked at ~60-70mm deep.
When fitting mine, I originally bought a 9mm MDF board to make the collars. This would cause the magnet to stop the window dropping, I swapped to 12mm MDF and job's a good 'un.
What about something like these? http://www.focal.tm.fr/car/en/access1/index.htm
PDF here http://www.focal.tm.fr/car/download%...estek/tn44.pdf
This unit is 72mm deep, Providing you use a MDF collar you should be okay.

You can't go far wrong with any of those brands - given that you've got a JL amp (again, good choice), like Scoobysmiff says I'd be tempted to go with that brand. I think that the JLs will be brighter than anything else you're thinking of, and if you liked the infinities you might prefer that sort of sound.
Top of my list would probably be the rainbows, but that's partially because I like a more laid back sound, and also I like things that are different
See if you can find a car with the JL XRs in it, have a listen, see if you like, and vote with your cash. You should get an excellent sounding setup with that amp and any of the speakers, so spend the time on getting them mounted solidly, and spend some time choosing what suits you best for tweeter positioning too.
I put my tweeters on longish leads for about a month, and just held them in place with blu-tak until I found the right place. If you do that, warn anyone that gets in the car to check before slamming the door though, as it could be the end of a friendship if someone destroys a tweeter

cheers guys
I have always played around with audio since I was 17 and I decided I have worked hard enough to treat my self
and the gril friend said I could
I like a soft sound, listern to rock music more than anyting else..
Its looking like the rainbows as I have heard them and they did sound good, but on the other hand I have heard the JLs in a stand and it was just as good
I will try and blag some 19mm mdf for the spacers as well
I will start with the tweaters in the door cards then start playing
thanks guys, Im really looking forward to getting this installed

i agree with chiark about putting the tweeters on longer cable and placing them on bluetack around the cabin to find the best place for your ears, it's a very good trick used to place them correctly.but another good point about the XR's is that the crossovers have whats called "jumpers" on them, you can effectively taylor the sound of the speakers by positioning the "jumpers" to one of 5 positions affecting the mid bass, mid range and tweeter levels. they are all +/- upto 5 db if memory serves me correctly, which will assist you in finding the best sound for you in the car.

went for the rainbow profi vanadium phase plug just as I find the JLs a bit to bright for my music taste, but as indicated probably not set to the setting I would need
says they have a 10 hour run in period... what a shame might have to go for a lonnnng drive
I will tell you all the results when I get the kit installed

the run-in is just to loosen up the suspension (spider/surround). There's three schools of thought on this:
a) it's a load of ***** and makes sod all difference
b) treat them gently and then wind them up a bit
c) hurt them when they come out of the box
Some speakers definitely improve when they've had some playing, to others it makes no difference. My kenwood components sounded fairly good out of the box, and didn't seem to change over the life of their install. My CDT 5s sounded throttled out of the box, and got significantly better (more bass output) as time went on. The 6s were the same, but I did run them in by starting off gently, then working up to playing them loud.
So I guess I'm an option B sorta guy . I've seen people recommending option C, but I'm just loathed to do that to something I've just spent a bit of money on

I would use Rainbows Germanium speakers. WAY better than JL and so on. Also then Focal (most in cause of the Tweeter!)...take it, damp your door and be happy!
(With them I´ve been german Champion in SoundQuality and 3rd on the EuroFinals (with best sound, loosing install) on the EMMA!)

it's all in the ears man, you can't just say that one speaker sound better than another and thats it!
what's good for you might be rubbish for me and so on, but i agree with sound deadening - Dynamat extreme is wot i would recommend.

on the subject of sound deadening, I always use the Noisekiller Barrier mat now, having tried everything... I've come to the conclusion that the polymer based foil backed stuff with decent adhesive is the way to go, and the barrier mat is just that, but is about 55 quid for a sheet 2.1 metres x 1.2 metres so it's just a tad cheaper than the competition!
