Question re. Alpine CTA-1505R headunit

OK, daft question coming up, but here goes;
The Alpine unit has a Battery and Ground lead seperate to the ISO connectors. Does a lead have to be run directly from the battery to the unit? What happens to the seperate Ground lead?
