This is how to do it in a pre-facelift classic not sure it is the same but should give you some idea. Take the original subaru dash cage out of the dashboard, you will see that it is full of holes. Put the new cd player into the subaru cage (without the cage that came with your new stereo) and you will notice that the holes in the side of the stereo will match up with some of the holes in the subaru cage. The cd player will have written next to the holes what size of bolt to use (industry standard is 8mm long M5 bolt). Go buy some from any reasonable DIY shop. If you can't get 8mm long bolts there is plenty of room to use longer ones and space them out with extra nuts (i actually used 20mm long bolts) but if going this route make sure not to screw them too far into the stereo as you will damage the mechanism. Thats it fitted.
As for what to do with your single din gap, there are many options, guages, subaru forester dash pocket or my option a second head unit.
Search the forum for single or forester to see what other people have done.
