'scuse the dumbo question but if I have a go myself to install do any of these things "just plug in" or do I need to either wire it or get some adaptors to make it work ?
(mine is a MY00 if that makes a difference)

I know the UK/Euro cars have standard ISO connectors, which should plug straight into the back of the Sony/Kenwood/Alpine/Pioneer/etc!

As for the Japanese cars, I'm afraid I don't know!

I've finally had enough of that cassette player Subaru/Phillips call hi-fi. I don't want to spend a fortune, however much that is as it would probably be wasted on me anyway!

I know next to nothing about this stuff but as I'm clumsy as a fish CD's have no place in my car, so a MD/Radio will be the weapon of choice. If there's something out there that will just plug in easily and give me some decent MD and radio performance I'd be a happy bunny.

CarAudioDirect seem to have a Sony MDXC6500RGN unit at under £180. Any good?

Thanks

Personally i would buy a Kenwood, but unless you buy the top of the range one (retail:£500 Cheap shop:£300) you really won't notice the difference to say a Sony, Pioneer or Alpine!!

Boils down to whether you want security features, number of RCA's (for adding amplifiers later), etc!

Have a look at the adverts near the back of the likes of Fast Car/Max Power/etc!

The Sony you have a price on is pretty good, and even better at that price!!!

Thanks Andy.

I really can't see myself adding amplifiers and all that stuff (baby lancat's on the way). I'm happy enough pulling the front panel off it for security. Remote control like my old company Laguna would have been nice but hey how lazy can I get

Funny you should mention remote control!!

The £300 (retail:£500) Kenwood comes with a remote control for the steering wheel!! As well as having a MASK+ security feature.

The MASK system flips the the face plate over, so it only displays a blank. The stereo is more difficult to remove, as it locks the holding lugs into place. The MASK+ system has this feature, as well as letting the face plate be removed for really dodgy areas!!

The cheaper Kenwood MD unit only has a removeable face, but can have the remote control as an optional extra! You stick it to the back of the steering wheel, and you can do the main controls from there!

When I get my car back, I will get some photos of it, and post them here!

Hope this helps
Andy

Stick to the back of the steering wheel? Is my mental picture of a switch on the end of a piece of wire stuck to the rim with double-sided tape right? Just kidding

This MASK thing does sound neat but I don't think I can justify the extra £150 for it.

Sony do an optional remote joystick for £25 so that's a possibility too.

Is it me getting old or does all this stuff have to look so ugly ? Seem to remember the Radiomobile in my Austin Cambridge had a hell of a lot more style. (sounded cr*p tho)

Cheers

I'm running the same unit as Andy, and would wholeheartedly recommend it. It's actually from the previous year range, but is spot on.

You may be able to get a stonking deal as it's this time of year that Kenwood release a new range. They change the logo, maybe add another LED, and that's about it.

Nick.

I've got the one without the MASK+ system, and only the MASK system! I got it at a bargain price so I won't complain!!

Hi all,
I had a MASK kenwood system in make other car, but the thieves still took it.
It was just a flip, not a face off.
I also had all the steeing wheel remotes and also a credit card remote still.
If any one wants them, give me a REASONABLE price offline
I am also interested in a MD unit but I have the problem of having a pioneer 6 disc changer.
The price of a pioneer MD unit is nearly DOUBLE the price of a sony??!!!
Anyone selling one pls let me know or anywhere cheap to get one from )
Regards
G.
The wiring of the unit will be easy as it was the first electrical thing I did (after letting a authorised dealer to install my ICE system and getting it nicked the same day!!!!)
The steering wheel remote is infared so just sticks onto the back of the steering wheel, no connection to the unit at all.
(took me a while to know what bottons does what but it will come!!!)
The credit card remote was only for posing with!!! Controlled the music from outside the car no problem!! )
