I've pulled my hair out doing this and hope the following guide will save you the hassle I've had.

How to remove a Subaru Impreza MY05 CD player head unit

Hi Ed

I'm taking delivery of my MY05 next week and have just ordered a very tasty Alpine HU to replace the OEM one ASAP so these pics and instructions are invaluable!!!

The Alpine HU is single din and I read that the scoob slot width is too narrow? Can you tell me how you got your single din to fit... any pics would be a great help. Also did you need to get the wiring harness converter or do scoobs use standard ISO plugs now.

Cheers Paul.

PS what did you fill the bottom of the double din slot with? I'm considering the silver cubby with the door from the Forester but don't know how close or far away the colour is gonna be with the MY05 facia?

Nice one very useful. I was going to pay an ICE installer to do it.

I to am interested in what you have used in the spare slot. I'm aware of a black tray and the silver tray with cover.

I used the black single din Forester pocket (part no. 66128AE000 I think): it fits without having to drill holes and spare CDs fit neatly in it (they won't fit in the fancy silver hinged door pocket as the space inside is too small). Here's mine completed:
