Car kits into ICE...

I've been playing around trying to route the audio from my Nokia car kit (CARK91) into my ICE setup. My head unit drives an amp for the front speakers and I've been using a Y cable to feed both the output of the car kit and one channel of the head unit's front output into the amp.
What I don't understand is that when I put the phone in the car kit cradle, I get no sound from the head unit channel that's being Y'd into the amp (this has nothing to do with the phone mute if I haven't expressed this clearly). Can anyone explain and give me a resolution?
