After dismantling the rear half of my MY00 yesterday - the 6x9 Infinity's were not going to fit under any circumstances....

Back off to Halfords to get a set of 16.5cm 's and guess what? these aren't gonna go in either!!

I'm seriously p!ssed off now.

What speakers should I be buying as a direct replacement, either with or (preferably) without the metal blanking plate. I'm under the impression that it'll be a different make but just want some good ones - help please!!

...and which clever ba5stard thought it would be a good idea to glue the parcel in? Need a new one - lost my rag and ripped it out...

lol. the rear pacel shelf isnt exactly glued in, its just that the bonding from the rear screnn touched it so it gets bonded at the back, i dont think it is intended...

as for rear speakers, you can get 6*9s in a classic, and also 16.5cms. you just need to cut out a template for them from a sheet of MDF thats all....

I put JBL 6X9s in the back of my MY00 yesterday. Just drilled four holes and angled them so the least amount of the speakers was covered by the shelf itself.

Sounds ok to me and doesn't rattle or anything nasty, just nice crisper sound than standard.

Rear shelf was a bugger to get out though.

The usual way to fit 6x9s in a classic is to remove the originals as per chiarks instructions (see the FAQ thread) and then replace the shelf and screw the new 6x9s to the underside of the parcel shelf i.e. from the boot. My Kenwoods were fitted like that when I had a MY99.

I have some mdf in the loft if you need some ,im also quite handy with a jigsaw.....being a ex joiner

The parcel shelf is metal and appears to be non-removable. there was no way the 6x9's were going to fit, and the 16.5cm speakers will fit in the gaps, but are too small - I wouldn't be able to fix them down, and the blanking plate holes are far too small.

...and I thought this was going to be an easy job...

If you angle the 6X9s, 95% of the speaker is firing into the cabin and not just into the metal-work of the shelf. I didn't see it being much of an issue to drill through the shelf.

messiah in my old scoob if fitted 6x9's. made a ring out of mfd to the shape of the speakers and screwed it to the underneath of the metal shelf, then scewed the speakers to the mdf ring and left the std speaker grill's in for a stelth look. no rattels and they where quite solidly held together.

I'm a total numptie when it comes to shaping bits of wood.

Infinity do a fitting kit for bigger speakers for the doors, but dunno about the rear - a bit of investigation required methinks. Paying a bit extra to stop me buggering something else up would be worth it...

Halfords do them for the front doors of a classic to fit the 16.5cm Infinty speakers - about £13 i think they told me, but have to be ordered in.

let me know how you get on mate - front doors are next on destruction list
