As you may know i'm looking for a cd/mp3 player and a lot of the better ones seem to have motorised flip down fronts.
However a few of my mates say after a while they have had problems with the contacts etc,all that opening and closing etc.

Any opinions?

I`ve got an Alpine 7893r and have fitted 3 to customers cars.
Ive had mine for 18 months with no problems and I`ve had no complaints off anyone.

Hope that helps.

I've had a few alpines now and just considering another, all with motorised flip down faces, only problem I've had is with the current one which you can adjust the angle of the fascia to avoid sunlight on occasion it angles upwards when I first fit the fascia, just press angle down button and all is well.

Daz.

Thanks for the replies.
Wherever you look Alpine seem to have a good reputation.

The kenwood ribbons were a problem. I think it's been addressed now, particularly with the DMASK+ units.

my kenwood D-Mask has stopped opening when you try to eject the cassete, only today, but switch everything off and it closes as normal, there is a tape in but try and play it it comes up as MECHA ERROR, its only a few months old so it will be going back to the shop very soon!

Thumbs up

Had a Kenwood 8080r for around 3 years now,it is a d-mask+ type so you can remove the facia OR let it hide as normal, it has no ribbon cable for obvious reasons. I have had no trouble with this unit what so ever.

MECHA ERROR means that the tape is probably tangled inside the unit, will it eject the tape at all???

MECHA ERROR on the dmask usualy meant that the casssete was sticking or that the cassette may have alot of dust on it mine used to that.if it keeps on happenig then i had to have the sterio repaired because something had to be changed in it i cant remember now what it was

Nick,

Is it possible to get replacement ribbons, or to get them repaired (at sensible money)?

I've got a DMASK+ headunit that stopped working due to this!

Although if getting it repaired is cheaper than a new MP3 headunit, it might be worth while!

Cheers
Andy

I've had the headunit apart and it looks like a pig of a job requiring a soldering iron!! I can solder, just not that accurately!!

I've found a stereo shop in Croydon that will fix the headunit for £25 and give 4 months warrenty on their work.

Just to let you know, that the local stereo shop wanted £65+VAT to fix the headunit.

This place will do it for £25 and offer 4 months warranty on their work. A third of the price, for the same job!!

Three working day turnaround on the work. With the postage both ways, I should have a working headunit this time next week!

I've got a Kenwood flippy thingy and have had no problems yet (touch wood).

Seems reliable and robust enough to me.
