I want to change the original speakers (front /rear) on my new MY03 STI8 as they are pants. I don't want to change anything in the car (ie cut holes or pannels anywhere) just get some that will slot straight in to original fitting. I believe they are not a standard size for speakers.
The head unit is 4x45 watts output Pioneer. Where would you get them from etc
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's unlikey that you will find any speakers that fit without any modification as the standard speakers have a very shallow mounting depth - about 38mm. They also are fixed with 3 mounting holes which is quite unusual.

I installed Infinity 6000cs in my 03WRX using a 12mm MDF spacer. More info here

Front door wise, a lot will fit with the 12mm MDF collar, no metal cutting required. Infinity, focal are popular, I got Kenwood dual mags (6.5"), there are others. You won't get anything much at all in the backdoors, either a 4" speaker in the original collar or a 5.25" mounted behind the door skin using a 6mm MDF spacer. You're better off mounting something in the parcel shelf, that can be done without cutting metal, but does require some MDF constructions and holes drilled/grille fitted into the plastic shelf.

Regards amps, I found the "baby" phoenix gold (QX4/150 or whatever they call it) fits very neatly under the drivers seat, never got in the way of rear seat passengers, and it's out of sight It may not be so good if you're a very short driver, I suppose!

Thanks guys, I don't want to go cutting parcel shelf and would much prefer fitting rear door speakers instead. I wonder whether or not JL's 4 in speakers would fit without "MDF Spacers"?

Apologies to author of thread for hijack!

Thanks

Jerome

no worries, looks like we are in the same situation. Did you mean the JBL's as i called in to a local ICE house today, recommended by my local Scooby dealer, and they have said they can put in JBL speakers front and rear without any cutting etc.

The rear door speakers don't have the same problem with depth as the the fronts so you should be OK. I fitted Infinity 552i's in my rear doors without spacers and they have a 57mm mounting depth.

The main problem on rears is that the door card comes very close to the speaker so if the mounting height (i.e. how much front of the speaker sticks out) is more than about 8mm it may foul on the door card.

Also, the original speakers have 3 mounting holes so some drilling may be required if your JL's (JBL's?) have the usual 4 mounting holes.

Question

Thanks Gary, I just need to find out the depth of the JL (sic) speakers. They are the JL-VR400CX @£200 plus a Kenwood KAC8401 AMP @ £140 to be mated to a pioneer "dolphins" head unit and JL speakers already installed in the front. Any probs with this setup do you think?

Jerome

p.s. Thanks for the air space Ian!

The benefit from fitting replacement rear speakers in the doors whatever the quality IMHO are negligible - I would concentrate all the effort to the front as the sound from the rear as far as the front seat passengers are concerned is poor due to the position of the speakers in the doors.

I tried (well tested) several good quality 4" and settled on a cheap pair of Kenwooods for rear seat passengers.

Concentrate on fitting new speakers to the front, Dynamat the doors and get a good quality Headunit.
