Question

My03 Sti
Clarion 828 Head Unit
Dension Mp3 player routed via Aux in

The weak link is now the speakers, get some buzzing on bassy tunes. I like live music especially and much of it sounds crap on the standard speakers.

Rang 3 different places today for quotes on replacing speakers.

1. Didnt ask what type of car but quoted £50 for Clarion 6.5 component plus £40 fitting.

2. Explained Impreza limited choice because of space, recomended dynamat, Genesis or JL Audio speakers, looking at £400 fitted.

3. Again was aware of problems with Impreza, suggested Kenwood component at £110 or Focal slimline, which are new to market but are £249. Fitting was £46.

Budget is not an issue, but I don't want to throw money away. I'm rarely in the car on my own, and therefore dont crank it up too loud, just want a nice sound without distortion at a comfortable level.

i like a lot of live music, especially pink floyd and u2, and the focal speakers i have up front handle things well. That said, i also have a 10" fibreglassed-in sub in the side of the boot to get good punchy bass. The fronts alone will never produce great bass, but soundeadedning the doors will help no end.

i went for the 135 polyglass (the square basket and deep cones model) for better bass response and their acuracy, and i think live stuff comes through very well. These are one of the liviest speakers around, and although I've heard dynaudio set ups, the one my mate's got dosen't really cut it for me (sorry alan if you're reading this!!) as it just seems a bit muddy.

have a look at Boston Rallies as well as focal, dyns and so on. I would say don't go mad but spend more than £150 and make sure the speaker reputation is good and build quality and magnet is substantial.

cheers

forgot to add - invest in a decent amp as well, the internal onboard amp won't have enough power and playing it close to distortion levels may damage the speakers
