quick audio question
Hi there, will be getting my new wrx in september but am just wondering about having a different head unit fitted before delivery. I am considering an alpine 9812RB as it has MP3 however it's only a single din. Has anyone scrapped the double din standard job for a single din and if so does the finished result look ok or is there an ugly hole in the dash? Any advice appreciated!
thanks
thanks
Just fited a Pioneer 77mp. Clean looks, much better sound. Haggle and you should get one for £250.
Change the speakers as well. Infinity 6000cs fit in the front, they're 6 1/2". Have Blaupunkt Volicity VRC130's in the rear (130mm) - be carefule as many speakers are too deep to fit correctly.

jmk: Stupid question time. I looked at the Pioneer site and found this unit, but I can't see where the CD is inserted (nor on other Pioneer units). It does not seem to be reliant on an autochanger. Does the front panel flip down?
Also, does your haggling refer to talking to a scooby dealer, or a ICE specialist?
Thanks very much

The 77mp is the one in my photo. The top right hand button flips the front down for the CD slot. It plays mp3's and windows media audio (WMA) so I've not connected it to a changer thus far.
I ordered from hiwayhifi.co.uk around £230.....

JockyTT now that I like..... How do you rate the head unit, I like the retro kinda look, but does it sounds good and is it easy to use (unlike the OEL ones)?
Did you fit it yourself or was it fitted by someone else, never converted a Double DIN so was wondering what was involved. Also is that the Subaru pocket if so could you tell me the part number please.

edited to ask about the pocket

The headunit is great - it's got all the functions you'd expect but none of the flashy graphics or buttons of most new units. As I said it plays MP3's and WMA files (Produced by Windows Media Player) as well as CD changer compatible. It can also control a TV or DAB unit if you buy one.
The sound quality is excellent - especially when compared to the original. The only thing I need to do is buy the steering wheel remote.
The pocket I got from a Subaru dealer. It cost £18.45 and the part number is 66128AE000.
Fitting is very easy - once you remove the original headunit, you remove two metal brackets attached to either side of the unit and reattach to the new unit which has holes in the same place. The pocket also attached to the brackets underneath the headunit and you fit the complete assembly - headunit, pocket and brackets back in to the car. You also need an ISO adaptor lead to join the headunit to the cars wiring loom.
All takes about ten minutes.

Just getting into the MP3 and WMA option. Great sound and I have 15 albums on 1 CD encoded at 64k - not best quality but in a car you'd be hard pushed to know it wasn't from the original CD. Whatever you buy, make sure it can play these options and say goodbye to the need for having a multi-changer and all those extra wires. :-)
By the way, does anyone with the infinity's get distortion playing tracks with heavy base even at a moderate sound level (not into loud basey music but shocked at to find it sounds crap). Any thoughts on whether I've got a knackered speaker - never played loud (beyond vol 30, Pioneer unit) and it's been like this since new? (I have sound deadening in the door.)

JMK,
Whats the 77mp like at night time - how does the illumination work? I'm selling my Alpine unit because it's just too bright even with the dimmer set and from my driving position there's a mass of blue in my periphery vision!!! So looking for decent sound without the lights!!!
