Have a '00 Sport and looking to improve the sounds.

Have about £300-£350 to spend and looking for head unit (def. possibility of it needing to be mp3/cd unit)

Will i need to upgrade standard speakers or are they ok?

Only decent system i have seen in looks is the pioneer matt aluminium/ titanium finish

Come on guys, help out or the missus will spend it on the house!!!

I'd recommend getting an Alpine, I've got a 7894RB which can be had for less than £300 because the new models are out now - the 9815 should fit in your price range. But then I've never been a huge fan of Pioneer.....

If you want something very funky, plays MP3's CD's and has moving / interchangeable images then the Sony M1000TF is the one to go for.

It's a little above your range @ 369.99 - www.letsbuycaraudio.com

But well worth every penny with the motorised tray and quality of the screen. No need to upgrade the speakers (this would take you well over your budget anyway if you did).

My advice would be the Blaupunkt Los Angeles MP72. Looks great, sounds great (IMHO just as good as other people's £300 unit), does MP3s and CDs etc. Get one of those for not much more than £200. Then get yourself some decent front speakers for ~£100 (Infinity CS605, focals, etc).

I would lay decent amounts of money on the blaupunkt with uprated speakers sounding a lot nicer than a £300 header unit with the standard speakers.

Spend your £300 on a good head unit and front speakers, not a fan of Sony equipment, too many breakdowns for my liking. Depents on your taste have a look around Halfords first then , if you see a nice unit buy from a good internet retailer and save yourself some dosh!!

Very good point about the standard speakers...you really need to change both the HU & the front speakers to get decent sound.

go down to car electronics on castle boulevard mate, they'll price match pretty much anywhere - so just get the lowest prices (go in In Phase in Radford) and then buy it from them - they've got a good selection of quality fronts as well.

cheers

If you need MP3 then look at the Alpine- theyve got a feature called Media Xpander which is a sound processing chip designed to improve the compressed lean sound of Mp3's.
