To cut a long story ...

I've got a 4dr 98MY with a ScoobySport exhaust fitted. To cut down on noise inside the car I got some DynaMat sound proofing stuff (as recommended by a local car audio specialist) and fitted it in the boot area. It got rid of a lot of the noise from the exhaust - thus the wife is now happy :-)

The local car audio shop suggests that sound proofing the front door panels will result in better sound quality from the front speakers. He uses the stuff in his Escort Cosworth and swears by it.

Has anyone out there tried sound proofing to improve car-audio quality? Does it really make that much difference?

Just how good are the standard speakers? I've replaced the standard head-unit with a Kenwood one. Should I go the whole hog and upgrade the speakers with a decent set, including oxygen-free speaker wire etc.

What are the actual rear and front speaker sizes for a 4dr 98My?

Yes dynamat in the front doors will help, my car is having it's install done imminently and dynamat is already on the list. Yes it does make that much difference, (if used in the correct places).

Standard speakers are crap, (sorry, too opinionated), they are of a very basic quality and not capable of giving good quality sound reproduction.

If you want to improve your system, changing to OFC wire will help and upgrading the speakers will help also.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the advice. I'll be putting high quality DynaMat (£27 covers approx. 4sq/ft) in the front door panels soon, together with uprated speakers and OFC wire.

Can anyone recommend replacement speaker sizes for the front and back (MY98 4Dr)? I was thinking of 6"x9" for the rear and 6.5" for the front, will these fit OK?

What speaker sizes have other folks successfully fitted?

Rear speakers: The rear shelf is cut to accept circular speakers (I think 6") only. If you want to fit 6x9s then you need to either (a) get the shelf cut or (b) get collars made to fit the 6x9s into the standard fitting.

From memory, there have been several threads about this in the past...

I have a friend called Speakers - well that's his nickname anyway. Would you like to meet him?

I wouldn't bother with changing the wires unless you are going to use a powerful amp. Standard wires are fine if just using the headunit, and rewiring is a real pain (I know I did it).

If you are running from the headunit then go for coax's, not components which generally need an amp to run them.

Oh yeah, and sound deadening makes a big difference, go for it.
