I am a total novice when it comes to ICE.
I want to upgrade my standard Subaru radio/cassette for a CD player/ system.
I don't want anything to complicated and for now want to keep the standard speakers.
My budget is under £500
Any advice on what people would recommend and where to buy it would be appreciated
thanks

£500 budget, you can get a good head unit, speakers and amp for that price!!!!!!!!! Recommend infinity 605C for the doors(£100 approx), spend around £250 on a head unit, that leaves you around £150 for a good quality amp, it is well worth it.

dont bother buying a decent head unit if youre gonna keep the original speakers cos it will still sound crap!
like the man says with £500 you can get everything you need, dont blow it all on the head unit!

Do you have a tonne of MP3s yet, or is everything on the traditional CD?
If you're thinking about or already have some MP3s then you might be interested in putting an MP3 capable head unit in there. That'll give you the ability to play MP3s, CDs etc then you can either add a changer or some form of MP3 device when the bug takes you
From what I've seen on here, I'd consider the Blaupunkt woodstock as a good value for money thing, especially as it includes DAB. I've personally got the Kenwood KDC-PSW9524 (have a search for a review if you're bored) and would rate it highly.
You will not get the best out of anything with the standard speakers, and I'd budget to upgrade the fronts.
Cheers,
Nick.
