ok,
it now looks like you lot has convinced my i need a amp
(note to self : must convince wife)
Where is the best place for it?
i will prob get a 4 channel amp, something like a Kenwood KAC-849, unless advised otherwise,
if i mount it on the back of the rear seat how do i mount it, ie on MDF, and how do i stop it looking like a rats nest of wiring, i suppose the best route for the cables is down the center console??
Advice and directions please

Good luck on convincing the wife
I'd mount it in the boot for simplicity. You can fit it under the seat should the desire take you, but things get quite tight down there. Saying that, there's no reason why not to if your amp is small enough and you take care on what you're doing ensuring you cover all the terminals very well
For amp, I'd look at the Caliber or Phoenix Gold range as to be honest I think their entry level is good to very good for SQ.
Cheers,
NIck

I've recently seen a nice install for a single amp in the boot of the impreza.
A carpeted panel is place in the boot behind the wheel arch on the right hand side. The amp is then attached to this. The wires can either run down the centre or at either side of the scooby. obviously keeping power and signal cables separate.
The purple area is where to install the panel:
