Whos put bass into their boot and removed the rear speakers. I keep getting told that the sound quality will be poorer due to the ban-pass effect

I currently have 6*9's covering up the rears. I had them as I wanted to ultimately ditch the subs... but once you've had subs in a car going back to front and rear 6*9's does not seem to be an alternative.. with the subs turned off the Focal 6*9's provide no bass at all..... or what I would call Bass.. perhaps in an Estate the sound would come through better

Would peopel here:

1. Leave holes when I remove the 6*9's.....
2. Cover the holes with say a metal sleeve

I have 2 subs that are reasonably well powered and it is decent quality stuff.. I'm onlyn interested in quality not volume..

To be honest, I think you're going to have to try this for yourself as it will be extremely dependent upon many many things.

What someone has told you is that your boot is acting as another enclosure, which is true.

By allowing this enclosure to vent into the car, it will theoretically change the response and could indeed act as a band pass enclosure.

In practice, I think you'll need to try it as the parameters of your particular set up will be unique and so the frequencies that are coming into play for your boot will be unique...

Nick.

Yeah I think I already knew the answer to that one

I was just gonna remove the rear speakers - a two minute job and see... (as they are mounted underneath the shelf)

Why not mount a couple of free-air subs beneath the rear shelf. I've got this set up and although the bass is not pronounced as using enclosures, the over all sound quality is brilliant.
Oh... and you also get your boot space back again!

Yep

Never happy.. I'm a moaning old git.....

Just dont seem to get there. I have heardthe perfect sound system in a Scoob... but that one had the interior and linings fully removed.. I mean everything and had been fully dynamated - about 30 rolls or so... and put back together.

I'd worked out for the spec the car had I'd have needed over £10k... perhaps I should have gone for it.. just dont want huge amounts of soundproofing as I want to be going on the racing track soon..... just been holding off till I have about 420bhp...

What are 'free air subs'... Anyone got any piccies as I've never heard of these

Would not mind having my boot back... at present it is stuffed with amps, Capacitors, water tank (well away from the Farad/other electrical stuff!!) and the subs and the rear speakers - which will soon be coming out....

Free air subs don't have a box. They use the boot as their "box"

Nice lookng install

I see you had to put an mdf parcel shelf in to cope....

What rms are te subs rated at?

I've just removed my rear 6*9's and realised that I'll have to close the holes up as the quality is not as good as a proper boot enclosure....

What do you reckon to the sound? I could be tempted to go that route to save space...

I was using two Rockford Fosgate Punch XLC 12" Subs.. in a twin enclosure sub box... I think they were about 1.25cubic feet.. (sealed) 3/4" Mdf.. Painted and sealed inside.. Very Very Punchy.. especially in a 5dr impreza. Running from a Punch 200 Amp

Full system was / is (some bits sold / given away)

Main Headunit is Nakamichi MB100
Secondary Headunit Kenwood MP6090R in AUX input on DA Convertor
Phoenix Gold PLD1 Line Driver
Phoenix Gold EQ213ix EQ / X Over

2x Punch 100's Bridged (left and Right) Ie amp for left amp for right.
1x Punch 60 Rear Fill
1x Punch 200 for subs..

Front and rear Speakers were Rockford Fosgate Fanatatic x's and Fantatic Q's (better ones in front)

Also had Rockford Fosgate Power Series 6.5" Mids and AudioPhile Tweeters and X-overs but there is no chance these will go in the scoob doors... posted pics ages ago of these... Ask Chiark how big they are..

The bass isn't as good as with sealed enclosures. But it's a good compromise. I'm not sure the speaker rating but I'm driving them with a Genesis Profile Sub amp (1 x 550 watts RMS)

I previously had a single Infinity Perfect 10 sub in a box drvien by a 300w Infinity amp and I'd say there's little in it, the enclosed sub probably just had the edge. For sound quality though, I think the my current set up is better.

Dave

The Genesis amps seem pretty powerful to me... but suppose it depends on the speaker resistance as well. For example my front Focals were quite happen to run off one chanel each side of a Genesis 4 channel. The Dyns that I've just put back in have to have 2 channels running each side otherwise the sound is not loud enough

Why is this???

Even my Genesis miniblock - supposedly 360wrms ish(about £600) at is it 4 ohms (or 2ohms) and higher at a single ohm.. but dont think you can then do stereo... dooohh is more than capable of running two Diamond M12 Subs rated at 500rms each.....
