Which head unit?
#1
I picked up my 1st Scooby yesterday (an MY99 Impreza Turbo) and it came with the standard Subaru radio/cassette but with a Philips 6 CD changer in the boot.
I'd like to replace the head unit, to get a better sound but was thinking it might be cheaper to get a radio/cassette and keep using the existing changer. Will the sound be as good as if I get a new unit that plays CDs?

Ideally, as well as upgrading the H/U you should also think about upgrading your speakers as the standard ones are s***e!
I have Infinity 605cs components in the front in my MY98 Impreza which seem to be highly recommended on the BBS and have them running from a 2 channel amp. Although they will run fine off the H/U, amping them really brings them to life
As for the rears, I upgraded these to Pioneer 2-way speakers for the ease of fitting, just removed the standard ones and they just dropped in. Some people fit 6x9's in the rear but this requires some extra modifications.
It really depends on how far you want to go and how much you want to spend.
Hope that helps

Replace the whole lot. You can flog the changer on here for a fair price.
As Gavin says, look at upgrading front speakers at the same time.
Work out a budget, then plan for that. Do you need tape, or any format other than CD? Do you want to play MP3 files that have been burnt onto a CD (as MP3 files, allowing you to get 10-ish albums on one CD)?
If you want to spread the costs, go for the head unit first, then speakers, then add a changer if you want one.
