Hi Julian,

The speaker sizes are the same front and rear - 5.25".

The front speakers are not very deep so if you purchase anything deeper, you'll need to pad the new units out a bit. This is not a problem as you can spacer the drivers out a good half an inch, maybe three quarters, before it starts to touch the inner door panel.

Just put some RF FNX1514's in the front of mine. These have depth of 2.5" (63.5mm) so I'd guess the standard speakers must be around the region of 2" in depth.

For what it's worth, I can confirm that you can get 2.5" worth of driver in there WITH SPACING. And the inner door panel still fits on ;]

Regards,
Dan

Brumster....
Please can you confirm the 5.25" size for my99 speakers? I thought that they were 6.5".
The speakers I want have a depth of 67mm, do you think these would fit in the front with spacers?

Hi Nick,

No problems. I've just been and fetched an old speaker out the garage, so these are 'from the horses mouth' :]. MY99 speaker sizes (front)

CONE diameter ~ 5" 2/8ths
FRAME diameter ~ 6.25"
DEPTH (mating face to back of magnet) ~ 1.75"

Marked as 4 ohm, max 30W rating. Single paper cone.

At 2.6" (67mm) it's going to be very tight. The lower part of the door may not fit properly or, if it does, may bulge slightly. I wouldn't like to call it, myself. But you could probably squeeze them in there. Remember that mounting depth of 1.75" is from the MATING face to the back of magnet... and there's room for a little more even with the standard speaker.

Can you try before you buy, or maybe a 14 day return provided nothing damaged?

Incidentally, the rear speakers are the same dimensions but with a different cone and rated at 6 ohm, not 4 ohm.

Cheers,
Dan

Oops, just to clarify - those speakers are confirmed as 5.25" items. IE: They were marketed by Rockford Fosgate as the 5.25" ones. But the actual chassis size is nigh on 6.25".

Just checking ;]

Dan

Thanks Dan
I think I'll have to try them first - as you recommend. Is it worth replacing the wiring?

BTW Dan, were you at the Surrey meet? I was one of the Bristol chaps.... I was the sad one in the Scooby-Doo sweatshirt...!
I remember we talked to a brummie-type there! :-)

Ah, Nick! Yes, ofcourse!

Aye, that was me, the sad chap sitting by himself scoffing his Sunday lunch ;].

No doubt I'll see you around again - are you one of the chaps coming along with your buddies to the Mintex in Bournemouth this month?

Anyways, we're heading off topic here aren't we ;]. Hope the speakers work out.

Cheers,

I was hoping to come to the rally but I've arranged to go to Power Engineering on the same day - so I'll have to miss the rally. :-(

My Alpine dealer is suggesting not putting in rear speakers at all & using a bass box in the boot. I'm mighty confused about all this!

I took some measurements from my 97MY 5-door yesterday. Thanks to Miles for his excellent instructions.

A big assumption of mine here is that the 97MY and 98/99MY door internals are the same and just the trim type was changed.

From the following it looks 67mm is possible, just!

I have a pair of JBL TC60's I was going to fit with separate tweeters, however there is little room in the door for the two-tay crossovers and the tweeters would not go well behind the standard grills. I don't really want them on the tiny triangular mirror backs. Although they would just fit with a little overhand, I don't feel happy from a security viewpoint. My conclusion is to spend about £100 on the best pair in full-range coaxials that will fit in there with or without spacers. Any expereience ir suggestions. My hardware is Alpine, but I have always liked the tone of Infinity speakers in my own and friends cars in the past.

cheers,
Rob.

Can I just say sorry for the long pre-table gap and the horrid typing.

Still want recommendations for speakers though!

Dan,
I just re-read you notes about the Rockford Fosgate FNX1514's; depth of 2.5" (63.5mm) and around 6.25 chassis, sold as 5.25" items

I recently bought some Mission 5.25" coaxials with integral silk dome tweeters at £125. They were a little small for the standard fitments, so I've made a pair of 8mm MDF spacer rings to reduce the 4.95" hole diameter. I also listened to some Kaliber and S<mumble><mumble> models in a demo rack. Both of which I thought may be a bit bright.

The missions are smooth, even though they haven't had the 24 hours running recommended yet, and I suspect I got the front-right out of phase. Still I don't think they are getting anywhere near as low as the standard fit dual-cones. Still, I'll recheck the wiring at the weekend. They may also be a little too laid back when in the door panels.

I really miss having somwhere discrete to mount my Pioneer tweeters and crossover units. Very annoying as my JBL TC60 bass speakers are just about the right fit for the now modified door pods.

I see your RF's are neat fit depth-wise, how about the front mounting? Are they similarly priced and widely available?

Did you do any research against any others? What's the context of your system and musical tastes?

thanks,
Rob.

Hi Rob,

>I see your RF's are neat fit depth-wise, how about the front mounting? Are they similarly priced and widely available?

The RF's are the typical 4-screw mounting as opposed to the Scooby's 3, so there's holes to be drilled in that respect. But since I needed to spacer them anyway, it worked quite well (ie. countersunk screws to hold the spacer in via the standard 3 fittings), then the speaker into the spacer via the other 4.

The RF's and Missions were 'bundled' together at £280 inc VAT. They are widely available, but it's hard to get a good price on them as there's very few official dealers.

>Did you do any research against any others? >What's the context of your system and musical tastes?

Not really. I asked for opinions on the Alpine DDDrive's and didn't receive to brilliant a response, but that was mainly down to people's taste in music. I've got other RF stuff in the car so I was happy to keep it all 'brand'. But it was more a decision based on recommendation of others, particularly since my musical requirements aren't particularly demanding (mainstream pop, dance with the occasional step into something different).

Cheers,
Dan
