Cool

Hi All

As some of you know... I've just traded the scoob in for a Lotus Esprit.

The stereo is utter to$$ unfortunately and there doesn't seem to be enough room to fit anything decent.

Car layout:-
2 speakers at front (4 1/2 inch!!)
2 at back behind seats (5 1/4 inch)
That's it!!!

there doesn't appear to be anywhere to fit a sub.

3 questions:-

1) What is the muts nuts head unit for bright clarity and fairly high output (nowhere to mount an amp either!!!). Preferably with a single CD slot thing.

2) Is it actually possible to get really good sound quality (I'm not bothered about thumping bass, but enough to fill the sound) with the size of speakers which will fit. Or should I consider getting the rear mounts made larger to allow for larger speakers?

3) What are the muts nuts speakers?

Many thanks

Simon

Question

This has nothing to do with your question,
but how does the Esprit compare to the WRX
in terms of handling, power delivery and
ensuing acceleration?

I recently traded my Nissan 200SX for the
WRX MY98 that I now drive, and I would say
that although the WRX is faster and handles
better, the 200SX had better engine flexibility and low end power due to the
variable valve timing. The WRX needs to be
revved a bit more.

I would recon your Esprit would not be too
good at low rpm, do you need to stack on
the revs to get it moving?

You may want to look at the Kenwood PS-series CD player. I have the PS970 Minidisc and it's bloody good on the power output front (not using those anymore) and the display is excellent.

Speakers: I like CD-technologies but these are really designed for use with a sub.

Can you not fit a small (v.small) specialist sub box behind the seat?

Yee-har's suggestion is the best: Phil really knows his stuff. Where in the country are you, though?

Talking

Simon tried to keep up with me in my scoob last Tuesday night, straight smooth 'A' road, (A52).

All he did was manage to spin his rear wheels apparently as I disappeared into the distance.

Sorry Simon, couldn't resist.

Simon,

Congrats on the new car, hadnt posted my approval yet. Looks fantastic.

Head unit, go for quality not power. Smaller enclosure in an esprit, therefore volume need not be as high.

You may not have heard of it but for a single slot cd I would only choose the Becker Grandprix.

This is unconventional looking and you may hate it, but the sound quality far surpasses usual japanese crap, including my own pioneer (had to have a tv).

If you choose carefully you can get a five to produce a decent amount of bass, as long as there is some kind of enclosure behind it. Or alternatively in smaller cars a tune up woofer which I normally spit on can actually sound very impressive (fits below the seat if there is room).

Phil Leach is great and is well worth going to.

However when I am up north, I would go to Audio Images in Bradford. They can make any sound come from any vehicle and have an enormous through put of cars and therefore have tried all installation techniques. They may be able to make you a tiny box, or enclose the fives behind you. Another suggestion is to have them make some builds for your doors and put some sixes in them, these would give you some bass. They are also incredibly cheap. (I should charge them for these plugs, but they have done things for me so cheaply that they practically already pay me!)

My friend has had eights put in his FTO (by audio images) and the bass they emit is incredible given that they have no distinct enclosure. Audio Images built the door builds in his car and if you look I guarantee you will not know what they made and what mitsubishi made. Funnily enough, he had to tone down the quality of materials he used so that the builds would not show up the rest of the car. He also integrated a tv into the centre console, took out the thin plastic surround from the head unit gear stci etc, and extended it using filler fibre glass etc so that it flowed into the lines of the tv. He then recovered it in vinyl and replaced it. Again you would not know that mitsubishi dodnt fit televisions in their ftos.

Sorry for the length of this.

If you need some suggetsions I am sure I figure out loads, including amps etc.

Email me directly if you need any help.
