If you added a sub and amp and it sounded "crap", you got something wrong...
But it's a good point - what do you actually want to achieve? What's your music tastes? What's your budget?

I tried rear fill speakers in my STI-V, but it was a complete waste of money and time, you are far better off going with decent Components up front and a good Amp and Sub setup imho.
