Question

I've a Alpine Head Unit and CD-Changer. I'm now looking to change the standard speakers.

Does anyone have any recommendations on speakers to partner the Alpine equipment. I like the look of Alpines own speakers - any comments?

What speakers are installed as standard in a MY99 scooby and what are their sizes? I'm too lazy to check the owners manual

Thanks in advance,
Stefan

dont worry about partnering to alpine head units they are just good enough to partner most speakers available on the market.

Never going to be as good as a decent separate amp though.

Alpine DDdrive speakers are actually ok but you would be advised to go to a manufacturer that specialises in speakers. I have always liked MBquart. Clif Designs are great too but expensive and cant handle a lot of bass.

Decide what type of music you like then do a search under the ice section for speakers, I am sure you will find loads of advice.

Good luck.

I know that Infinity 6.5" speakers fit. I find them a little "splashy" though from a pure hifi point of view. I wish I'd have bought Alpine DDrives now.....

Stefan,
I recently upgraded my head unit and speakers in my MY99. I fitted a panasonic tuner/cassette 4x60w (peak) with a multiplayer in the boot. I also fitted 5" MBquart components in the front, with sound proofing in the doors & MBquart 6x9s in the back. The sound is so much better than standard. I don't have the volume full blast often but when turned up loud it is still perfectly clear in my view. I was unsure of whether to get an amp for the speakers but having heard it don't feel there is a requirement.
The standard speakers were 5" approx all round with tiny little magnets compared to the new ones. It was a bit of hastle puting the speakers in as the final mounting was completely different from standard. However the instructions I got from info on this page for removing the rear parcel shelf and front door panels were spot on. They made that part of the job so easy.
I was also impressed with the sound proofing (brown bread) which was realy easy to put on. I put on two layers and I don't know if it makes the speakers sound any better but tapping the door from the outside sounded totally flat rather than the 'ting' beforehand. I would be glad to tell you how I secured the speakers and where I put the crossovers etc, e-mail me if you would like any info.
Kenny

For a variation on a theme, I'll be at PE as well.

Got rid of my Alpine head unit and changer for a Kenwood MD Mask headunit and a 6 disc changer. Still running two 4 channel Alpine amps. I've got a 1.5 farad stiffing cap between the power cable and the twwo amps. One amp for the Kenwood component speakers upfront, and the Pioneer's on the rear shelf. The other amp is bridged, and I'm running two 10" Alpine subwoofers off that. Front doors are 'deadened' as is part of the boot. Now all I need to do is stop the subs from rolling around, and I'll be done until the new car!

I've been stealing ideas off Lee car for a future install in my P1!! He's done a much better job than me, but I put that down to a lot more planning!!!

Andy

I was supposed to be at P.E. on Saturday but won't make it now. I'd have joined in on the sound off, but I don't think it would have been fair on everyone

Kenwood mask headunit and changer. Cerwin Vega front components and rear 6" 2 ways. All powered by a lovely looking Ultimate amp. I bought the amp because it looked good rather than how it performs but it surprised me and performed as well.

I used to have an Alpine haed unit and changer with Cerwin Vega components in the front, 6x9's on the shelf, 3 10" boxed subs all powered by 1 3 channel crossfire amp.

I'd say you can't beat Cerwin Vega. Especially the Vega range!
