MY02 display fuzzy

I have the Type A audio set in my MY02 WRX.
The green display panel looks fuzzy, or out of focus, as if smeared with vaseline (oo-err), or has been cleaned by rubbing with wet and dry. I have cleaned it myself, and there doesn't appear to be a protective film to remove.
Do they all look like this?

Pretty much, yeah. IIRC it did have a protective film thing like many displays. Pulling that off helps a bit, but it never looks sharp, modern etc.
