Received my Pioneer 7400MP and I can confirm that it doesn't fit the MY01. The unit itself is too wide for the existing trim and whilst the surround can be separated from the head unit it cannot be left off as it houses the cd eject button and various other important bits. Ths means you cannot sit the unit behind the fascia trim and just attached the button pannel, you have to have the surround fitted. Quite dissappointed. Anyone got any recommedations of a reasonably priced (£300) MP3 head unit?

Any one got a definitive answer as I have one of these on order and could do with knowing. Dont mind if it sits in front slightly as anything has to be better than the absalute pap Subaru provide...

it cannot be fitted with surround sitting infront of the dash fascia because the fascia hole is smaller than the width of the unit. As I said above the surround cannot be left off because it includes the cd eject button. The only possible option seemed to be to set back the unit so far with the surround inside the fascia trim (not even sure if the mounting points would allow this). I thought this would look aweful so didn't try it. The pictures of the other units refered to seem to suggest the removal of the surround is possible allowing the button panel to poke through from behind. I brought the unit on this basis and was completely gutted when it didn't fit.
Now I'm not a fitting expert but I was completely stumped. Open to other suggestions though.

That's true. To fit the 8400, you need to leave the trim off. Luckily there are no buttons in the trim, and the inside panel pokes through the hole nicely, thus you can fit it in the MY01 / STi etc.
Could you not save for a month and spend extra pennies on the 8400? You say you have a budget of £300, and mcs sell it for £392. Might be worth the wait?
Edited to say....
Just looked at the 7400 and can't see the buttons in the trim you are refering to. Looks the same as my 8400 except it's a different colour.
Confused

might have to save up for the 8400 although I don't really need the extra features, but I still think the Pioneer is the best looking unit. On the 7400 you remove 2 screws behind the button panel and then unclip the whole surround, which is connected to the silver plate that fronts the head unit when you have the button panel removed. It's all one piece, the only hole in it is the slot to put the disks through. You can then see the innards of the head unit. Odd that its different from the 8400 though - but there you go. I was expecting just the surround to clip off so I'd would be left with a rectangular piece of silver plastic like a letter box, but alas it was not to be (and I waited nearly 6 weeks for delivery).

Is it not like the older Sony units where you have to 'snap' the outside of the surround off to make it fit ? Theres used to have perferations to enable you to do this with a knife or similar. ??
Failing that looks like ill be getting an 8400 too

As you suspected, the 8400 just has a plastic trim which unclips (looks like a letterbox when not fitted). Every Pioneer I've ever had has been like this, soit's strange about the 7400. Oh well start saving those pennies ...

I had a long conversation with someone in the Pioneer Marketing dept yesterday who was very helpful. He sent someone into the warehouse and got them to check as well as talking to their own internal tech support.
He did say it is non removal, but did say it could be cut away and would still work fine.... I suppose if you find out how much a replacement facia is then its not so bad.
In the end I have ordered a 8400 anyway.... more pennies but I suppose it will be worth it and it look sooooo cool in Iain's car.
He did say a good way to recognise is that if from the front you can view slots in the side then it will not be removable. Intrestingly enough they did recoginse there would be a problem with fitting's in Jap cars - hopefully they will re-address with later models

Another MP3 unit that fits is the new Blaupunkt Los Angeles MP72 (NOT the older Los Angeles MP71 as that had a non removable bezel). List £350, but you should be able to get it for <£300. I've done so, and it works a treat, with their new 4*50W amps, sounds great too. The header unit is even in silver, so looks good with the trim.
For another <£200 (if you shop around), you can also fit Blaupunkt's IDC-A09 5 disc in dash changer with it. Fills up the lower half of the double DIN slot beautifully.

I have no digital camera, I'm afraid (unless a local owner wants a look and brings a camera). But you can see pictures of the kit at blaupunkt.co.uk.
