Pioneer DEH8400MP Remote Control

Just installed this unit and am well happy with it, however I have a problem with the Pioneer steering wheel remote.
The remote works fine when the unit is 'closed', but when it opens up to reveal the OEL screen the remote stops working.
Ive played about with it and it seems its just out of range due to the angle of the front display. If I take the remote off the wheel and hold it higher and closer to the unit it works fine.
Has anyone else fitted this unit and had a similar problem? It seems a bit stupid if this is a generic fault so maybe its just mine.
