I've just bought a set of Infinity 552is for the rear (already got 605s in the front of my UK STi) and they do not fit. The infinity web site says they are a direct replacement for the manufacturer originals, and indeed they are 130mm, but they are actually bigger than the hole in the door, (and the screw holes are in different places). I'm going to try and make an mdf collar to raise them slightly and see if the door panel will fit over them, but there isn't much room.....

No chance. The infinity 552s will not fit in the back doors (despite only being 130mm and described on Infinitys web site as a direct replacement), and there is no room for an mdf collar either (the door panel will not go over it). All I can assume is that the new STi has a different size hole to the normal wrx?

Iain,
Did you have any probs fitting the 605s in the front or were they just direct replacements?
How much of a difference are they compared to the standard units?
I now have installed my DEH8400MP and need to look at the speakers next.
Cheers
Mark

Hi Mark
The 605s fit comfortably in the front doors, but they are not a direct replacement. Basically, because they are deeper than the original speakers, you will need to make an mdf collar of some sort (mine was about 12mm) to sit between the speaker and the door to stop it hitting the window when wound down. (The screw holes are in different places as well so you'll need a collar to attach them to anyway).
I've got an 8400 in my scoob as well (see http://www.iainbyoung.co.uk/myscooby.htm). Changing the head unit definitely improved the sound, but changing the speakers really made a huge difference. Much more bass, clearer sound etc...

Iain,
Thanks for the reply. You didnt take any pics whilst installing your speakers did you? or do you know of a thread that describes how to take the door apart?
Also, did you change the tweeters as well or just the main speakers?
Cheers

Sorry I didn't think to take any pics while I was doing it I might be able to take some but it'll probably be a couple of weeks before I get time.
There's a pretty good faq for taking the door apart on http://www.chiark.com, but for a quick summary....
1) Unscrew the screw in the small door pocket (behind the electric windows switch)
2) Pull off the triangular bit of plastic that covers the back of the wing mirror mounting
3) Unclip the top of the small plastic trim surrounding the door handle (don't undo the screw because this holds in the mechanism)
4) Take out the electric window controls by carefully easing out from the back, and unplug the connection
5) Unscren the screw that was exposed by removing the window controls
6) Finally unclip the door panel by carefully pulling it (starting at the bottom rear corner). Note that the panel was very still in my STi and needed a fairly hard tug.
7) Just reverse the process to put everything back
I haven't changed the tweeters yet. I got the component kit, but there were already tweeters in the door, and so as I was running out of time, decided this is a job for a later date...
Hope this helps,
Iain

I've just gone through the pain of fitting 605's in MY01 WRX - and I took lots of pictures!
I was going to do a FAQ but in the meantime I'll sort something out. either on this thread or - I'll mail you.
I won't have time until the weekend though.
Cheers

Typical.
I put up a question in the vague hope that someone might have a clue, and what do I get?
Makes, model numbers and even a step by step guide on how to do it!
Fantastic, many thanks people.
Should know Scoobynet wouldn't let me down.
Now, who knows about what will fit in the rear doors ;-) (assuming that the WRX and STi are in fact the same)

OK finally did a FAQ - it's not as neat as Iain Youngs - but there's a few things in it that may be useful for anyone with a similar tolerance level to myself!

Hi to all as a newbie scoobynetter.
There is a way of fitting 130mm back door speakers. I have fitted to my MY02 Pioneer 1375s (prefered the mid and treble to equivalent priced infintys), but expect it will work with any 130mm speaker. Take the back door trim off, make up a 6mm mdf adaptor plate, and mount them BEHIND the metalwork. You need to feed the assembled speaker and adaptor plate through the hole in the metal at the back of the door, having lifted the plastic sheeting off. Much better than having to fade the speakers out.
If anyone wants more info, I'll try and help.
Also, the single best upgrade IMHO is to fit dynomat - preferably dynomat extreme - to the door panels (inner and outer and trim panel). Can buy basic dynomat from Halfords, or the better and lighter exteme from many good ICE shops. Much better value for sound improvement than new speakers or new header.

Fed up with the horrible popping and general naffness of the standard speakers in the '01 WRX.
Anyone recomend suitable speakers to replace those in the front and rear doors?
Not interested in changing the head unit.
