HID = High Intensity Discharge lights
have a look on www.autolamps-online.com for information - I tend to think that the 10K versions might be a tad optimistic and a bit of marketing hype / not what you think
Light sources and their approximate Kelvin values:
Candle 2000K
Sunrise or Sunset 2500K
Standard household light bulbs 3000K
Noon on a sunny day "Daylight" 5500K
Electronic flash 6000K
Overcast sky 7500K
Blue sky 12000K

an M3 probably has HID lights if they look bluish - similar to Audi and Merc lights
bluish tint is possibly approx 6000K.
4200K is "warmer" / redder but gives out slightly more light AFAIK
HID systems are more expensive as they use extra components (ballasts and wiring) rather than just bulbs but they tend to last longer - lifetime of the car / 10000 hours etc. They also use less juice once they've "struck up" and run at an equivalent 35W compared to halogen / tungsten lights at 55 / 60W
I'm no electrical / lighting engineer but think of them as fluorescent lights - they need a high voltage to "spark" and light them (provided by the ballast units) and then they run cool at low power once lit.

TOP BIXENON KIT FOR THE SCOOBY!
I bought a H4 BI XENON 8000K kit from HID imports on ebay! They are amazing and well worth the money! They got the new type of BIXENON bulbs that move.
Both my low and high beams are xenon too. Only cost 250 quid and look awesome. SO easy to fit too. I recommend em to anyopne!
Here s a link for an auction they got on now:

I have had dual beam HIDs before and found that the dip beam was great ut the main beam was hardly any different, can you confirm that when you flick to main beam, they are as good if not better than standard main beams. Also is it very obvious from inside the car when you switch between them? because in mine the beam pattern seemd to get a little wider but not much more.
